Finding outdated content in Shopify
In Shopify, outdated text usually lives in the announcement bar, collection descriptions and product copy mentioning old shipping windows. Discount codes get entered in several places at once but are usually deactivated in only one, so the mention of the offer stays visible after the code itself has expired.
Have your store checked from outside
Enter your address and see what's still advertising last month's sale.
No account, no credit card. Takes a minute.
So geht es
- 1Check the announcement bar. Open it in the theme editor — this is where a discount lingers longest.
- 2Read collection copy. Go through every collection description for dates and percentages.
- 3Check policy pages. Compare shipping, returns and delivery-time text against today's actual policy.
- 4Check from outside. Look at the store address with DustOff, including pages the theme editor hides.
Where content ages in a store
Beyond the product pages themselves, it's the surrounding pages that go stale:
- The announcement bar above the header, still showing an old promotion
- Discount codes that have expired but are still mentioned
- Shipping and delivery-time notes left over from the holidays
- Seasonal collections still linked after their season has passed
- Policy pages — shipping, returns, contact — with an outdated status
Start with the announcement bar
Nothing ages more visibly: it sits on every page, right at the top, and gets added the moment a promotion launches — but rarely gets removed the moment it ends. If you can only check one thing in the store, check this.
Shipping deadlines are time-sensitive by nature
A line like "order by December 20th for delivery before Christmas" needs a fixed removal date built in from the start. Read in January, it doesn't just look old — it stops answering any question a shopper actually has.
Why a stale discount costs more than a stale sentence
Because the promo code and the announcement text are two separate things in Shopify, the code can expire while the sentence keeps advertising it. A visible discount that doesn't apply at checkout is one of the most common reasons a cart gets abandoned.
Häufige Fragen
- Why do discounts stay visible after the code expires?
- Because the code and the sentence advertising it are separate. The code stops working; the sentence stays put until someone edits it.
- Does this actually affect sales?
- Yes. A visible but unusable discount is one of the most common reasons a checkout gets abandoned partway through.
- What about seasonal collections?
- They stay linked from menus and the homepage well past their season unless someone removes the link deliberately.
- Is a shipping-deadline note worth removing after the date passes?
- Definitely — it stops being useful the day after the deadline and only creates confusion from that point on.
