Do you need to update the year in the footer?
Legally, the year in a copyright notice isn't required. For visitors, it's still the fastest signal of whether a website is looked after. Easiest is to set the year automatically or drop the notice entirely — both beat a fixed number from two years ago.
Enter your address and see what on your website no longer holds true today.

Three clean solutions
In order of preference, each one removes the need to ever think about it again:
- Set the year automatically from the system date
- Drop the copyright notice entirely — it isn't required
- Use a range like "2019–2026", also calculated automatically
What visitors read into it
The year sits on every page and is therefore the most-seen detail on the whole website. If it shows a year that's two years old, the message is unambiguous, no matter how current everything else is, and no matter how good the rest of the design looks.
Häufige Fragen
- Is the copyright symbol required?
- No. Copyright protection exists without a notice; the notice is pure habit.
- What about the legal or imprint page?
- That needs details that are actually correct. A year doesn't count, but outdated contact details are a real problem.
- Is a fixed year ever fine?
- Only if someone reliably updates it every January. An automatic setting removes that risk entirely.
